ProPublica Welcome Center
The ProPublica Welcome Center at 72 Fifth Avenue transforms a historic publishing house into a modern space for investigative journalism and public engagement. The two-floor center serves as both a gateway to ProPublica's work and a symbolic bridge between traditional publishing and contemporary digital journalism. The design thoughtfully preserves and highlights the building's architectural heritage while creating spaces that reflect ProPublica's mission of transparency and revelation.
Design Concept
The concept centers on creating a physical manifestation of investigative journalism's core principles: uncovering truth through layers of investigation. This is achieved through a careful interplay of historic and modern elements, with materials and spatial sequences that metaphorically peel back layers to reveal deeper meanings. The design uses transparency, materiality, and lighting to create a dialogue between the building's past as a traditional publishing house and its present role in digital investigative journalism.
The material palette combines preserved historical elements with contemporary interventions. Original exposed brick walls and wooden beams are retained and celebrated, while new materials like perforated aluminum panels and gunmetal finishes add modern sophistication. The contrast between old and new is particularly evident in the feature wall treatments, where perforated metal screens create varying degrees of transparency and revelation. The color scheme employs Benjamin Moore's Super White OC-152 and Black 2132-10 to create a clean, contemporary backdrop that allows the historical elements to shine.

Spatial Planning
The two-floor layout is carefully orchestrated to support both public engagement and educational functions. The first floor houses a welcoming reception area, digital archive, and waiting room, creating an inviting public entrance point. The second floor features a lecture hall designed for presentations and educational events, with flexible seating arrangements that facilitate various types of gatherings. Throughout both floors, the original classical columns are preserved and highlighted, creating a rhythmic connection to the building's architectural history.
Furniture & Lighting
The furniture selection bridges modernist classics with contemporary pieces, creating a sophisticated yet approachable atmosphere. Key pieces include Florence Knoll Lounge Chairs in deep indigo, Knoll Laccio Tables with black tops and aluminum bases, and simple black Arno Wood Side Chairs. The lighting design features a combination of historic-inspired globe pendants from Rejuvenation and modern LED fixtures, creating layers of illumination that enhance both the architectural features and functional needs of the space.
